...And the intrigue over the new Z/28 intensifies...

Since it’s the Nurburgring I’m wondering the ZL1 will end up having a faster time than the Z/28?

This is why I don’t like the Nurburgring being the “benchmark” for sports cars. According to this it’s faster than the GT350R but on any other track I don’t think that would be the case.

I doubt it. The last one was slower than the Z/28. And the Z/28 is supposed to be the real track monster. Remember the last ZL1 was 7:41 and the Z/28 iirc was 7:37:40 even though it started to rain partway through the lap. And even though it ran out of gearing on the straight.

Counterpoint. When your times are in the 7-8 minute mark, it’s a lot easier to draw a hard conclusion. Where there would be a difference of a couple tenths on any other track you could have several seconds. Long laps just provides far more data to work with for improvement. To think about it another way, when you are getting times that are really close together when you’re trying to fine-tune the car, it’s harder to tell if it’s getting better or worse. Make the lap 3-4 times as long and the gaps widen. It’s like looking at the lap under a microscope.

181 mph on the long straight. That shift into final gear showed me that final gear is set for EPA mpg numbers at cruise speed. No matter though, he didn’t use it until over 170mph. Obviously, a speed we all do every day on the way to work. A VERY fast car. I don’t care what the lap numbers are in the end if they’re under 8 minutes. It’s going to be a very fun car where I drive and that’s not on the track.

I just watched the full video and am now changing my tune a bit. I don’t think the straight helped as much as I originally thought.

Also, this video makes me ok with having an auto trans in my next one. Good lord.

On the one hand, manual is fun.

On the other... I can’t imagine driving at that speed and also changing gears at an acceptable rate without killing myself. If the new auto is as good as it’s supposed to be, that’s the way to go. Leave the manuals in the SS, V6 and I4.

Although most are hoping the Z/28 is NA, it will probably come with the LT4, lots of aero, and light-weighting. It should be faster than the ZL1 which is more of the grand tourer with all the options.

I just feel like an LT4 in the Z/28 is too wild. The SS has a near-perfect weight distribution so you would think they’d want to try and keep it light up front.

All of GMs cars use the final gear for mpg.

It beat a caterham superlight r500 which I cannot comprehend.

and if fifth (assuming its a 6 speed) does 170+, I think that’s just fine with me. Who needs that much every day speed anyway.

Well that’s the point. Using the final gear like this also benefits the buyer if they mod their car for a bit more power that doesn’t require a modded transmission. That sixth gear with 50 or 100hp more could easily pull to 200 in rare instances there’s enough road to do so

Crazy... Found a site saying the R500's top speed is 150 mph (not surprising due to aero). If that’s true, the ZL1 being able to run up to 180 on the long straight makes quite a difference.

I saw a few sections where it got up to ~160 on the twisties too.

Insane. I think “long sweepers” is the correct term here, but damn. Chevy’s killing it.

im gonna look at the revs and find out what the limits of that gear is .

ok, Checking the last few turns before the long straight, I saw that the driver indeed short shifted at 6.2k on that straight, and I saw the driver doing so earlier on as well in other corners, but when shifting didn’t make sense for the minute time in that gear, he would carry the revs up to 6.5, telling me the pull gives out just a bit before redline but is still usable when the need arises, which is consistent with the supercharged engine.

Now, Chevy says it’s available with a 10-speed automatic so I have no idea what this car has so I can’t talk about the high gear because there’s enough of them to be close together that it doesn’t matter anymore what gear is truly what gear. Turbos would have carried the power just a bit higher, I suspect. The last gear, whatever number it is showed 5400rpm@177mph, therefore 6.5 redline=213mph. Since the F40 did just 200 with 478 turbo HP and a higher redline, I think this ZL1 should easily crack 200 with it’s 640hp, especially at the meaty peak around 6.2k (203) so this is pleeeennnnttyyyy of car . I’d like to see what some tuners are going to do with ripping off the SC and throwing a few turbos on it....turned the Ford GT into a simple 1k hp machine this way.
